Wood Pellets vs. Firewood: Which Is More Worth It?

Wood pellets and firewood comparison

Choosing the right fuel is one of the most important decisions for homeowners and businesses investing in renewable energy. Wood pellets and firewood are the two most popular options – but which is more worth it? In this comprehensive comparison, we analyze costs, heating value, storage, convenience and environmental impact.

Heating Value and Efficiency

Wood pellets have a significantly higher calorific value than conventional firewood. At approximately 4.6–5.0 kWh per kilogram, ENplus A1 pellets are well above the average for log wood (3.4–4.0 kWh/kg at 20% residual moisture). This means you need less material to generate the same heat. Modern pellet heating systems achieve efficiency rates of over 90%, while wood-burning stoves typically achieve 70–80%.

Cost Comparison

The wood pellets price per tonne currently stands at around €220–280 at wholesale. One tonne of pellets replaces approximately 1.5 cubic meters of hardwood. Firewood costs between €60–120 per cubic meter depending on the region and type of wood. When converted to heating value, pellets are often cheaper, especially considering the higher efficiency of pellet heating systems. Those who buy wood pellets in large quantities – such as 1 tonne or more – additionally benefit from volume discounts.

Storage and Handling

Wood pellets are compact and standardized. They are delivered in 15kg bags, big bags or as bulk material and can be stored in a space-saving manner. Firewood, on the other hand, requires significantly more space and must dry for at least 1–2 years before use. Pellets can be automatically transported to the boiler via a conveyor system – firewood must be manually added.

Environmental Impact

Both fuels are CO2-neutral, as they only release as much CO2 as the tree absorbed during its growth. However, wood pellets have the advantage of cleaner combustion with significantly less particulate matter and ash. ENplus-certified pellets guarantee an ash content of less than 0.7%, while firewood produces 1–3% ash depending on the type of wood.

Convenience and Automation

The biggest advantage of pellet heating systems is automation. Once filled, the system independently regulates temperature and fuel supply. With firewood, you need to regularly add fuel and remove ash. For working households or commercial buildings, pellet heating is therefore the more convenient solution.

Conclusion

Wood pellets are the better choice in most cases – higher heating value, less effort, cleaner combustion and often cheaper per unit of heat. Firewood has its place for fireplace owners who enjoy watching the flames. For main heating, however, we clearly recommend wood pellets. At Adama Global Trade GmbH, you get ENplus A1 certified wood pellets directly from the importer – at wholesale prices with Europe-wide delivery.
